About the Festival

New Annual is the City of Newcastle’s flagship arts festival. The inaugural event was held in February 2021, spanning ten days and featuring more than 50 events presented by local and visiting artists. Newcastle’s New Annual is much like the city itself – not quite what you’d expect. It’s about creative experiences, connections, and exploration. Locals and visitors will discover new work, new perspectives, and new places.

We are inviting EOIs for high quality artistic and cultural projects that meet the following 'Programming Priorities':

  • First Nation's engagement
  • Diversity access and inclusion
  • Regional, national and international significance
  • Celebrates Newcastle
  • Development of new work, including projects to attract widespread public and media interest
  • Participatory and creative learning
  • Digital activity
  • Talent development and capacity building
  • Touring potential

The vision of New Annual is to put Newcastle on the radar nationally and internationally, as a creative city where exciting, ambitious and accessible contemporary art and culture grow and thrive.

The mission for the festival is to foster a prosperous, diverse and resilient economy and build capacity in the arts and cultural sector by delivering a contemporary cultural event that showcases Newcastle as a creative hub.

It will also be a vehicle to share the City’s stories with growing audiences through the values of diversity, collaboration, participation, connection and authenticity.
