Night and Now

Concertos, Quintets and World Premieres. Australia’s classical music all-stars make a triumphant return to the concert hall stage.

Frédéric Chopin, the great Romantic pianist and composer, was also classical music's greatest introvert. The virtuosic pianist gave no more than 30 public performances in his lifetime, preferring instead the apartments of his closest supporters to the grand concert halls of Paris. In fact, before their public premiere, both of Chopin’s brilliant piano concertos were performed in these intimate salon settings, with the composer arranging his own music into powerful chamber works.

In this tradition, Omega Ensemble’s first national tour for 2021 presents a program of stunning concertos and “quincertos”, including Chopin’s first piano concerto performed by acclaimed Australian pianist Clemens Leske in a thrilling new presentation for piano quintet.

This revealing performance also includes the first public performances of Gordon Kerry’s new Clarinet Quintet, and the world premiere of a new Flute Quintet by celebrated composer Elena Kats-Chernin, based on her own Flute Concerto and premiered by flautist Sally Walker for whom the original concerto was written.
